How To Find Out If People Are Visiting Your Website From Their Phone
I just got back from a whirlwind week in New York City. The occasion was my 14-year old niece’s first visit to the Big Apple. Having lived there for many years, I am the perfect NYC tour guide.
And a perfect NYC tour guide spends a lot of time in the subway. This is cool: straphangers can now get Wi-Fi in most subway stations! And it even works a lot of the time while you’re on the train.
So, taking a look around I noticed that 90% of riders were on their phones. Fewer people were reading newspapers and books than the last time I visited in August. Not a surprise.
So, what does this mean for businesses?
The percentage of people viewing your website from their phone is growing exponentially and if their experience is less than optimal, then your site is not creating clients for you. Does this mean that you have to re-do your website? First, find out how many people are visiting your website from their phone. You should have Google Analytics installed if you don’t already (it’s free). All the info you need is there:
How To Use Google Analytics To Find Out If People Are Visiting Your Website From Their Phone – Step by Step
- Step 1: Go to Google Analytics and Log In.
- Step 2: On the left-hand dashboard under Audience, scroll down to Mobile.
- Step 3: Choose Overview.
- Step 4: In the data you’ll be able to see the percentage of visitors (usually from the past 30 days) who visited your website on a desktop or laptop computer, on a phone, and on a tablet.
Here’s how it looks in Google Analytics (feel free to print this out):
If the percentage of people visiting your website from their phone is over 30%, then stop right now and visit your website on your phone. Not happy with how it looks, acts, and feels? Probably your website is not creating clients for you. So now’s the time for that long awaited website re-do – no more procrastination for you!
It’s awesome when you know your site provides a stellar user experience for everyone, regardless of what device they use (especially the people who have been referred to you).

Betsy,
That’s a great tip for seeing how much traffic websites are getting from mobile devices. A lot of people believe that if you can bring your website up on your phone that you are fine. If the website isn’t “mobile friendly” then the visitor isn’t having the best user experience and Google is definitely demoting their sites in mobile searches!
Thanks for sharing your expertise!
Kevin
