For those who work in marketing at huge corporations, identifying a target market is the most important first step before the launch of any campaign or new product. This very important information forms the foundation of every aspect of a marketing strategy. But you, brave entrepreneur, don’t have a bahzillion dollar budget to create focus groups and hire branding agencies to identify the things you must know about your ideal client before starting a new business or even creating a website. You’re on your own. (As if you don’t have enough to do, right?)
Here’s why identifying your ideal client is muy importante (in other words…very important!)
First, there is a ton of competition out there. According to The Kauffman Index of new business formation, 569,000 new businesses launched in 2015 alone. Yikes.
That means there are oodles of businesses vying for the same clients you are. And, regardless of whether you’ve been in business for 20 years or have just left the corporate world to venture out on your own, your business is just a little teeny speck.
But, don’t be discouraged. When you understand the things you must know about your ideal client precisely and thoroughly you can become proficient at attracting and engaging that person. And do business with the people who immediately see value in what you offer and who are going to be able to pay your top fees.
Why There Are Certain Things You Must Know About Your Ideal Client
Have you ever landed on a website only to jump off immediately despite the fact the website probably had what you were looking for? That’s because the average business website is really good at telling you what the company does but really bad at telling you what the company can do for you.
When you know your ideal client as well as you know your best friend, you will be able to speak directly to that person, in a conversational way. That’s the key to keeping him or her with you long enough to get more information and do something (like call you, buy something, download a freebie, read your blog, etc.).
And unless you do the work to identify your ideal client, you can end up flailing around in the dark with your marketing.
To help you get started on identifying your ideal client, I created a super-handy workbook called: 5 Things You Must Know About Your Ideal Client. It’s a slightly less intensive version than what I use with my students and clients but it will get your brain cells fired-up and focused on who the heck your ideal client truly is.
And from there you’ll be able to craft revenue-generating, super-compelling, ideal client-attracting marketing messages that perfectly articulate what you do for your clients.
